The global demand for omega-3 derived pharmaceutical products is growing. Record-high 2007 end-user sales of Omacor/Lovaza
confirm the blockbuster potential of Pronova BioPharma’s active pharmaceutical ingredient.
Omacor/Lovaza is approved in the USA as well as key European and certain Asian markets as an adjunct to diet for the treatment
of elevated levels of triglycerides, and has also been approved in certain European and Asian markets for the secondary prevention
of post-myocardial infarction in the period following the initial survival of a heart attack. High triglycerides and post-myocardial
infarction therefore represent the group’s two target segments based on indications.
USA, Italy, UK, France, Greece, Spain, Germany and Korea represent our eight major markets. The market is growing, and at
the end of 2007 Omacor/Lovaza was halfway towards reaching blockbuster status with an end-user run rate above USD 650 million
in total. 56 per cent of the 2007 end-user sales were related to the sales of Lovaza in the USA, which grew by 109 per cent
during the year. This market growth is expected to continue, and Reliant Pharmaceuticals/Glaxo- SmithKline is actively promoting
Lovaza in the USA to increase the market penetration.
